Hafnium tetrachloride-brother who was forcibly separated
Zirconium (Zr) and hafnium (Hf) are two important rare metals. In nature, zirconium mainly exists in oblique zircon (ZrO2) and zircon (ZrSiO4). There is no single hafnium mineral in nature, hafnium often co-exists with zirconium and exists in zirconium ore. Hafnium and zirconium are in the fourth subgroup of the periodic table and have similar properties. Because the atomic radii are very similar, chemical separation is very difficult. As the saying goes, "If you have zirconium, you have hafnium, and if you have hafnium, you have zirconium", it embodies the "brothers" of zirconium and hafnium.
Zirconium and hafnium separation technology is also constantly developing. From boiling chlorination process, fire separation, extraction separation of zirconium and hafnium to the current wet separation and fire separation, the separation effect of zirconium and hafnium has been improved, and the purity of downstream products has been continuously improved.
Precursors containing zirconium and hafnium are mostly used in the field of materials or as catalysts in the petrochemical field. Hafnium chloride (HfCl4, also known as hafnium tetrachloride) is usually made from hafnium oxide, charcoal, and then chlorinated. After multiple purifications, high-purity hafnium tetrachloride is obtained. Hafnium tetrachloride is an important raw material for the synthesis of precursors containing hafnium, and has a wide range of applications in aerospace, petrochemical, nuclear, semiconductor and other fields.
Huajing Material's high-purity hafnium tetrachloride (CAS 13499-05-3) has two different specifications, namely hafnium tetrachloride within 1500ppm of zirconium and within 200ppm of zirconium. Other metal impurities add up to no more than 100ppm.
